چکیده

Metabolic rate of living organisms (energy produced per unit time) increases slower than organisms' mass. This phenomenon, when applied to different taxa, is called interspecific allometric scaling. Its causes remain unknown. Here we show that interspecific allometric scaling for multicellular organisms occurred as the result of evolution of organisms within the food chain, and certain mechanical constraints. We prove this conjecture by obtaining very close to experimental findings values of allometric exponents both for the maximal and basal metabolic rates.

Interspecific allometric scaling of unicellular organisms as an evolutionary process of food chain creation

Metabolism of living organisms is a foundation of life. The metabolic rate (energy production per unit time) increases slower than organisms' mass. When this phenomenon is considered across different species, it is called interspecific allometric scaling, whose causes are unknown. We argue that the cause of interspecific allometric scaling is the total effect of physiological and adaptation mec...

The role of food chain balance and common nutritional environment in interspecific allometric scaling of unicellular organisms

One of the major characteristics of living organisms is metabolic rate the amount of energy produced per unit time. When the size of organisms increases, the metabolic rate increases slower than organisms' mass, which has important implications for the evolutionary and ontogenetic development. Here, we study the fundamental causes of this phenomenon on the basis of metabolic properties of unice...

Allometric Convergence in Savanna Trees and Implications for the Use of Plant Scaling Models in Variable Ecosystems

Theoretical models of allometric scaling provide frameworks for understanding and predicting how and why the morphology and function of organisms vary with scale. It remains unclear, however, if the predictions of 'universal' scaling models for vascular plants hold across diverse species in variable environments. Phenomena such as competition and disturbance may drive allometric scaling relatio...

Quantum statistics and allometric scaling of organisms

This article proposes a mechanism to explain allometric relations between basal metabolic rate and the body size of organisms. The model postulates that energy transduction in biological organisms is constrained by two classes of dynamical processes: The -rst process has its origin in quantum mechanics and the constraints which the coupling of electron transport and proton translocation impose ...

Static allometry of unicellular green algae: scaling of cellular surface area and volume in the genus Micrasterias (Desmidiales).

The surface area-to-volume ratio of cells is one of the key factors affecting fundamental biological processes and, thus, fitness of unicellular organisms. One of the general models for allometric increase in surface-to-volume scaling involves fractal-like elaboration of cellular surfaces. However, specific data illustrating this pattern in natural populations of the unicellular organisms have ...
